How to Create a Yoga Routine That Actually Sticks

If you've been wondering how to create a yoga routine that feels realistic, enjoyable, and sustainable, you're not alone.

The truth is, creating a consistent yoga practice isn't about having the perfect leggings, the most flexible body, or an hour to spare every day. It's about building simple, meaningful rituals that help you reconnect with yourself—one step at a time.

Over the past few years, I've supported people in building a yoga routine that fits their lifestyle, and I've noticed the same challenges come up again and again. The good news? Creating a sustainable yoga habit is much easier than you might think.

In this guide, I'll share the practical steps I've learned from teaching others how to start a yoga practice and make it a lasting part of everyday life.

Step 1: Start with an Intention (This Is the Most Important Part)

Before you book a class, make yourself a cup of your favourite herbal tea.

Sit comfortably on your sofa, switch your phone to silent, and take out a fresh journal.

Write down a simple title ( my yoga journey, my journey to the mat... and underneath why you want to begin with an intention

Your intention doesn't need to be complicated. It can be as simple as:

  • I want to reconnect with my body.

  • I want to feel mentally and physically stronger.

  • I want to make time to de-stress and unwind.

  • I want to move more consistently.

  • I want to have more energy.

Your intention becomes your anchor. On the days when motivation disappears (and it will sometimes), your reason will keep you coming back.

Step 2: Choose a Yoga Studio That's Easy to Reach

One of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing a studio that's too far away because it is a popular studio but realistically if you want consistency it has to be easy!

The easier it is to get there, the more likely you'll build a consistent yoga routine.

At Hello Studio Yoga, we're perfectly located for people living around Finsbury Park, Crouch Hill, Crouch End, Tufnell Park, Archway and Caledonian Road. Most of our members can walk or cycle to class in around 15 minutes.

Removing travel stress makes it much easier to say "yes" to yourself.

Step 3: Download the Mindbody App

Booking your classes should be effortless.

Simply download the Mindbody app, search for Hello Studio Yoga, and purchase our 1-Month Introductory Trial for just £55... DONE!

Having a full month allows you to explore different classes, find your favourite teachers, and begin creating a weekly rhythm without pressure.

Think of it as giving yourself four weeks to build a healthy habit.

Step 4: Book 2 to 3 Classes Every Week

Consistency always beats intensity.

Instead of trying to practise every day, start by committing to two to three classes each week.

If your goal is to feel stronger, try:

  • Vinyasa Yoga

  • Pilates

  • Dynamic Flow classes

  • Core flow vinyasa

If your goal is to slow down and regulate your nervous system, choose:

  • Yin Yoga

  • Yang to Yin

  • Restorative Yoga

  • Slow Flow

  • Sound Healing

Then add one class simply because you're curious.

Trying something new keeps your practice exciting and often introduces you to something you never expected to love.

Step 5: Choose Classes That Fit Your Lifestyle

Be honest with yourself.

If you're not a morning person, don't force yourself into a 7am class.

Choose evening classes.

If your lunch break works best, book a midday session.

Creating a yoga routine means working with your life—not against it.

The easier it is to attend, the more likely you'll continue showing up.

Step 6: The First Class Will Feel Hard

Almost everyone feels nervous before their first class.

You might wonder if you're flexible enough.

You might worry about keeping up.

You may even consider cancelling.

This is completely normal.

The hardest part is simply walking through the studio door.

Once you've taken that first step, the next one becomes much easier.

Remember, every experienced yogi was once attending their very first class too.

Step 7: Tell Your Teacher Your Goal

When you arrive, let your teacher know you're trying to build a regular yoga routine.

Our teachers genuinely care and love that. our passion is to share our passion!

They'll encourage you, help you choose suitable classes, and support you as your confidence grows.

Sometimes a few words of encouragement are all you need to keep going.

Step 8: Every Sunday, Plan Your Week

One simple habit makes an enormous difference.

Every Sunday evening, spend five minutes booking your classes for the week ahead.

Treat them like important appointments with yourself.

If life gets in the way and you need to cancel, don't leave your week empty.

Reschedule another class immediately.

This small habit prevents one missed class from becoming two, then three.

Step 9: Attend the Same Class Regularly

While it's lovely to explore different styles, there's real value in returning to the same weekly class.

You'll begin to recognise familiar faces.

You'll build a relationship with your teacher.

You'll notice your progress.

And your practice will naturally deepen over time.

Routine creates confidence.

Confidence creates consistency.

Consistency creates lasting change.

Step 10: Celebrate

Celebrate each milestone, 1s t c lass, 1st week, and the 1st month , with journalling, a little gift such as eye pillow, a yoga book, a yoga mat, a new yoga outfit, something to congratulate your achievment !
